Practical Application for Estimating the Crown Density of Conifers Using Lidar Data
نویسنده
چکیده
The crown density is related with the hierarchical structure of the trees and one of the most important factors considering the biological diversity. This study focuses on the advantage of the LiDAR data, and we tried to estimate the crown density of conifers using the 3-dimensional distribution of the LiDAR pulses. The targets were selected from 13 areas of Hinoki and 10 areas of Cedar tree species in Izu region, Japan. The reference data was acquired by the interpretation of high-resolution optical airborne data inside 15m radius area. The gap rate was estimated by the ratio between 1st pulse reflected by the forest floor and others by plot area, and acquired crown density was compared with the reference one. The analyzed results showed that a highly positive correlation was found between them. In addition to the rate of crown density, a relative spacing was utilized, and the correlation coefficient affected the threshold of the forest floor. This study shows the potentiality of the LiDAR data for the estimation of the crown density of the conifers. The examination of the application to other tree species is necessary for the future studies. * Corresponding author.

A voxel-based lidar method for estimating crown base height for deciduous and pine trees
The overall goal of this study was to develop methods for assessing crown base height for individual trees using airborne lidar data in forest settings typical for the southeastern United States. More specific objectives are to: (1) develop new lidar-derived features as multiband height bins and processing techniques for characterizing the vertical structure of individual tree crowns; (2) inves...
متن کاملErrors in LiDAR-derived shrub height and crown area on sloped terrain
This study developed and tested four methods for shrub height measurements with airborne LiDAR data in a semiarid shrub-steppe in southwestern Idaho, USA. Unique to this study was the focus of sagebrush height measurements on sloped terrain. The study also developed one of the first methods towards estimating crown area of sagebrush from LiDAR. Both sagebrush height and crown area were underest...

Airborne lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) is a proven technology that can be used to accurately assess aboveground forest biomass and bio-energy feedstocks. The overall goal of this study was to develop a method for assessing aboveground biomass and component biomass for individual trees using airborne lidar data in forest settings typical for loblolly pine stands (Pinus taeda L.) in the sou...

Persian juniper and Pistachio are grown in low density in the rangelands of North-East of Iran. These rangelands are populated by evergreen conifers, which are widespread and present at low-density and sparse shrub of pistachio in Iran, that are not only environmentally but also genetically essential as seed sources for pistachio improvement in orchards. Rangelands offer excellent opportunities...
متن کاملCharacterizing the Height Structure and Composition of a Boreal Forest Using an Individual Tree Crown Approach Applied to Photogrammetric Point Clouds
Photogrammetric point clouds (PPC) obtained by stereomatching of aerial photographs now have a resolution sufficient to discern individual trees. We have produced such PPCs of a boreal forest and delineated individual tree crowns using a segmentation algorithm applied to the canopy height model derived from the PPC and a lidar terrain model. The crowns were characterized in terms of height and ...
